To ensure your wig stays beautiful and remains wear worthy we have compiled a few tips and tricks on how to care for your wig.
How to Wash Your Wig
The most important tip to remember when caring for your KinkyCurly/Yaki wig is to take care of your wig as if it as your actual hair. It must be washed, conditioned, and styled. It is recommended that you wash your wig after every 25 wears or so. To avoid over-washing, keep your natural hair clean to protect your wig cap or simply wear a wig cap over your natural hair. When it is time to wash your wig, use your finders to detangle your wig gently. The goal of detangling your wig is to ensure that you protect the definition of your curls or coils and avoid a “bird’s nest” result upon drying.Read the care instructions for your wig for further details on how to detangle your wig. After you detangle, use warm water to dampen the wig, do not soak it or submerge your wig in water.Apply a small amount of mild shampoo to your damp wig. Let the shampoo set in your wig while you fill the sink about halfway with cool or warm water. Then turn the wig inside out and put it in the sink, make sure it is completely covered with water. Rinse the shampoo out, and add conditioner.Allow the conditions to sit in your hair for 2-5 minutes and rinse well. Pat out the excess water; do not wring the excess water out the wig. Avoid agitating your wet wig as much as possible.Note: If your wig appears to be dry or the hair is “crunchy” you need to spray your wig with a leave-in conditioner, do not spray the roots. When you have finished rinsing your wig, place the wig on a wig stand and allow to air dry. If you do not have a wig stand simply lay it flat on a towel. How to Style Your Wig
If you would like to style you wig once it is dry, use special wig brushes or combs. Fingers are recommended for most styles and movement of your wig. Avoid using bristle brushes that are meant for human hair. When styling your wig avoid direct heat because it can damage the fibers of your wig. Do not brush your wig if you prefer defined curls. Our wigs are processed with advanced steam methods to promote style memory, thus, they do not require much styling. Use a touch of styling gel or a light setting gel for more defined and long lasting curls or coils. If you want to explore various styles with you wig then you can style it just like you would style your natural hair. Human hair wigs can be curled straightened, dyed, or even cut. It is not recommended that you restyle your wig. However, if you seek a different protective style speak to your stylist to gain a sense of your options or simply order another wig style to meet your needs.Refitting Your Wig
One of the drawbacks of washing your wig is having to refit and resize your wig. Once your wig is styled and ready to wear make sure you identify which side is the back of the wig and the front. You may also notice tabs that can be used to loosen or tighten the wig.To put the wig on, grasp the ear tabs and flip it over onto your head. Adjust the wig so that the front sits along your natural hairline. When adjusting your wig, grab it by the cap. Never tug or pull on the tresses of your wig as this will loosen the hair and cause it to fall out or shed prematurely. After you have placed your wig correctly, you can adjust the tabs and make sure it fits well and comfortably. There are many other options to ensure that the wig stays in place and is is comfortable to wear. You can use 1 of 4 methods. The first is a wig gripper. A wig gripper is an adjustable headband that adds friction around the hairline to keep the wig from slipping. The second option is a different type of headband called a cushion band. This is type of band is filled with a gel that keeps the wig in place and makes the wearing the wig more comfortable. A third option is toupee clips. These are small clips that are attached to the wig and then to your hair. You can also use double sided tape to hold the wig in place.Random Wig Wearing Tips and Tricks
